A Yancy Life is an Approved L.A.U.S.D. Black Student Achievement Program

A Yancy Life - Los Angeles Mission

Achieving success as a Black student requires a combination of high academic performance,

effective social and emotional management, and a strong cultural identity. To achieve this, the

strategies and methods employed must be tailored to the unique needs of Black students,

considering the historical and ongoing social and economic challenges that Los Angeles inner city

youth have faced.

A Yancy Life focuses on learning from the community and incorporating

the lived experiences of our students and families into our instructional

planning. We engage with our students and their families to create a shared

ownership of education and improve conditions for Black students, including

cultivating a personal value for education. Our instructional models and

pedagogy align with all district standards at every level to drive improvement in teaching and

learning for Black students. We will support the increase in accountability for improving Black

student performance. By following these steps, we can demonstrate multi-year increases in

Black student achievement.

• All content will be aligned with LAUSD and the school's educational goals. For many of these services, such as family literacy, numeracy and communication, and dual language and family communication activities, parents and children will participate together to promote joint learning and family strength.

• Increase safety training for youth through mentoring sessions, assemblies, and in-class presentations from safe routes/passage experts and professionals. Students should be trained in best practices, safe streets with supervision, avoiding areas, and handling unsafe situations.

• Yancy’s mentorship curriculum focuses on building self-esteem, improving student attendance and achievement, lowering dropout rates, and increasing campus culture.

Black Excellence Experience

A Yancy Life strives to provide students with a strategic plan to position themselves as leaders in fostering academic success, community awareness, mental health growth, persistence, and graduation, not just locally but possibly

nationwide.

The program focuses on teaching students to thrive within their own spaces, encouraging dedication, hard work, and resilience while striving to fulfill their potential and reach new heights in life and the educational process.

A Yancy Life teaches its students to lead by example and inspire and elevate each other in solidarity to strengthen and empower the community. By highlighting achievements in fields traditionally underrepresented by people of color, our student's excellence defies limiting expectations, and those students will redefine success on a broader, more inclusive scale.
