After The First Seed was planted, A Yancy Life began its journey to grow into a staple in educational services in the Houston area. As Yancy evaluated the education landscape in 2003, we saw several students being left behind with education changing from the "old school teaching methods" to the new standardized test-driven philosophy with strict learning deadlines, lack of time to re-teach material, and the de-emphasis on enrichment courses that make school fun. The Yancy team saw more and more students needing help to keep up in school due to the speed of instruction and instructional deadlines. To find a solution to help these struggling, we created an afterschool mentoring program consisting of a small study group (using our pull-out model) and enrichment activities (Drum Line, Sports, & Community services) with select students on one Houston campus. The students in this program excelled academically and socially with a minimum of 10% increase in the academic content area we supported. It became a "no-brainer" that these programs were valuable to every community school, and we had to impact more campuses.
As of 2013, A Yancy Life had grown to annually servicing a minimum of 750 students across 6 Elementary Schools & 2 Secondary Schools. Our partnerships with these eight schools grew organically. As we completed our yearly needs assessments at each campus, we saw another glaring trend that would push us to the next building block to impacting our communities. Fueled by teachers stating they have no help from parents at home, Yancy sought a solution.
Understanding that everyone’s 1st teacher is usually their parents and that it takes a village to raise a child, Yancy knew we needed to get the parents to engage with the campus as frequently as possible. With these thoughts in mind, Yancy Life started offering parent and community members various engagement activities ranging from Parent, Teacher, and Student Ice Cream socials to detailed workshops on Reading Literacy, Financial Peace, and GED study. With the addition of the Parent Engagement component, schools experienced increased parent visibility on campus, increased student attendance in out-of-school time activities, & parents showing increased ownership of their student's education.
Today we continue to focus on building community learning centers, in-school interventions, and out-of-school time programming that provides academic and educational enrichment opportunities for all students and their parents, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. We expanded to serving 50+ schools annually. Our experience in large, urban school districts includes Houston Independent School District, the seventh-largest district in the nation. Our educational programs, philosophies, and engagement are prime to implement in any urban school community within our United States.
To create strong school communities by cementing the development of life skills, academic excellence, parent engagement, civic leadership,
creative arts, and multi-media exploration while promoting higher education for all students with an emphasis on at-risk youth.
